about

While pursuing a doctorate in Animal Behavior at CUNY Graduate Center, Callosum has established himself as a fixture and friendly face in the experimental club music scenes of New York City and the internet more broadly. His 2017 EP on Nostro Hood System, ‘Tenaya,’ and his 2018 follow-up on hometown label Materia, ‘Moonwake,’ both infuse club patterns with his trademark indomitable positivity, offering a more sunlit alternative to the ultra-dark textures that dominated club music at the time of their release. On ‘Meadow Cycles,’ the artist abstracts and refines his process to produce some of his most consummate and evocative work to date.

The track, written entirely with hardware synthesizers and TidalCycles—a programming language for music patterns—is an interlocking set of evolving and cascading loops. “When I made this track,” Callosum explains, “I was alternating between really transformative raving and early mornings doing field work in the disrupted urban ecosystems of Queens and Long Island.” The track was inspired by those interconnected experiences, as well as artist’s readings in ecological philosophy. It is a meditation on annihilation and rebirth in the time of a mass extinction, a realization “that something beautiful will evolve in the aftermath.” On the remix, 48k label head Wild Kid debuts a new dance alias, Glasslife, and lets loose with a jungle-inflected cut inspired by the very same raves that motivated the original mix.
